Early Munroists Irvine Butterfield (Produced in 2008) Irvine
Butterfield, author, photographer, raconteur and
founder
president of the Munro Society has worked tirelessly for mountaineering
and conservation organisations for many years. Irvine
'compleated'
on Ladhar Bheinn in Knoydart in 1971 and is listed as the 105th
Munroist.
Irvine is interviewed by John Burdin who 'compleated' in 1984 and succeded Irvine as President of the Society from 2004 - 06 Sadly Irvine died in May 2009. A tribute to him on behalf of the Society can be viewed here. |

Iain
‘compleated’ his first round of the Munros in 1963; his
final summit being Beinn Eighe. He is listed as the 55th Munroist and ‘compleated’ a second round
in 1986. Iain
is interviewed by John Burdin and reflects on what he and many others
regard as a “golden age” of lonely hills, no guide books
and a sense of rediscovery.
Iain was prominent in discussions which culminated in the Inaugural Meeting of ‘The Munro Society’ in 2002 and was the Society’s first Hon. Secretary until 2004 when he was elected Vice-President and subsequently President from 2006-2008. |

Final Report on Phase 1 The Society has completed an initial survey of all Munro summits in terms of their environmental quality (the MQI Project), and, by summer 2009 a total of 574 assessments had been compiled by Society members. This report, produced in July 2009, was issued following a press release in October 2009. The press release can be viewed here. |
